Once and a while you get lucky. Fortune just smiles on you. This does not quite make up for the number of times fortune defaecates on you but still, it is nice once and a while! The other night I had what started out as a typically busy night – but nothing crazy. Knowing that the clouds can turn dark at any moment, I did not hold my breath. Finally at 4am, there were only 4 people left in the ED and all were dispo-ed. I was thinking, “Man, a sh## storm is going to come in at any minute”(as I heard that a nearby hospital was on total emergency divert since the entire hospital’s power went out and the emergency generator was barely enough to keep the vents running. There were almost no lights! Everyone was going to come to us. Well, I decided to lie down at 4:30 at take my chances, knowing Murphy’s Law was probably in effect where the medic console goes off as soon as I start drifting off. Next thing you, I hear the sounds of nurses signing out! I look down at my watch and almost three hours have passed with no new patients! I was nearly finished! I went out and saw one new patient with jock itch was registering and that was it! All the others were gone except an elderly lady waiting for social work. I saw that guy and discharged him in about 5 minutes (ever hear of OTC anti-fungals?) and had a perfectly clean sign out. The best part is I did not nod off evey 5 minutes on my way home! Sometimes the stars are aligned just right.
