Well, at first I could not believe it. It was one of the those “if pigs could fly” things. The pharmaceutical industry is supporting the Obama administration’s health care reform efforts. How could this be? Did they not fight tooth and nail against “Hillary Care” back in the early nineties? Now they are supposed to spent 100 million bucks on ads that support it! WTH?!?!!
Simple. I think they see the writing on the wall with SOME sort of reform coming and they don’t want to be seen as the bad guys. Thus they are throwing their support in – IN EXCHANGE for some plum deals.
A. Banning importation of less expensive drugs from Canada
B. Preventing the government from further meddling in setting the price of drugs (something I think the government HAS to do eventually and evidently many Democrats agree with)
Thus, they are going to look good while getting these good deals plus a huge new pool of patients with insurance! Voil`a! Makes them look good AND keeps them rich!
OK, one party passes Medicare Part D, which is explicitly forbidden to negotiate drug prices. The other party is hammering out the details of the health care reform bill, which explicitly forbids the government to negotiate drug prices.
WTF?! I am not a beneficiary of VA, Medicare, or Medicaid, but this peeves me to no end! CMS and the VA (and whoever ends up with the public option, should there ever be one) ought to be able to negotiate drug prices jointly. US citizens have subsidized drug costs for the rest of the developed world long enough., IMO.
Did Sen. Baucus get paid off by PhRMA? NPR recently reported he receives most of his campaign money from health care lobbyists, with only 5% received from his constituents.
This stinks, that’s for sure.
If it looks like a gyp, sounds like a gyp, and smells like one too–it’s prolly a gyp.
I can’t say I’m surprised though, Obama’s been selling out the left since he took office.
