Nothing’s worse when you get a baby’s urinalysis back with “Several Trichamonads”. Of course trich is an STD so as soon as that’s found you start thinking horrible things.
Well, luckily I called the lab and had the pathologist personally read the urine micro.
Nope. Just some contaminant or something. No worries. Nothing bad.
Thanks for the shitty read Ms Lab Tech.
Lucky because we just about called CPS to report it.
Jeeez. I can just imagine! Glad it got cleared up.
Worrying that there’s trich even around to contaminate a sample, though…
My heart stopped a little bit there and I started thinking all sorts of horrible things. So glad it wasn’t actually trich.
Actually, 5% of female newborns born to a mother with untreated trichomoniasis will be infected with trich. Be careful on calling CPS too quickly.
Many years ago my husband worked as a patrol officer before finally (thankfully) promoting and working indoors (I say thankfully because of the stories he would tell me). He works for a large city and was assigned to the inner city when he was on patrol. He got a call from the ER in the area. The call was regarding a 6 month old girl who had some sort of venereal disease. A SIX MONTH OLD BABY. Turns out it was the grandfather. I could never understand it because the mother was abused by this same person when she was a child so I don’t understand how she allowed her father to even come near her baby.
Some stories I wish I could forget. This is one of them.
Right, atyourcervix, I knew that but this was an 8 month old so that would not make sense.
a five year old boy covered with bruises. i was ready to call the county. cbc showed thrombocytopenia from acute leukemia. not better, but way different.
8 months you say? Yep, a little too old to be from birth. Ick. Good thing it was rechecked and found to be contamination. But geesh — if it takes something like that to have a recheck — makes you wonder: just what are they doing in the lab??
I remember we took my daughter to the after hours clinic when she hurt her arm at home, while we were playing. I thought the nurse was going to call CPS with the line of questioning how my daughter hurt her arm, like I had abused her.
I was an INCREDIBLY accident prone child – klutzy and fearless is a terrible combination in a kid! Every so often I would be brought in with yet another broken bone, concussion, dislocation or need for stitches, and at some point my mom and dad would be led out of the room and the nice officer or social worker would come in to have a chat with me.
My parents always took it in stride – I mean, when the story behind the 8 stitches less than a cm from your 5 year old’s right eye is “she thought the cereal box said we won $100 so she ran to tell me, but tripped over her little brother, got her footing back but then tripped over his toy truck and went sailing into the corner of a marble coffee table” you want to verify that truth really is stranger than fiction.
A few times someone would apologize to my parents for being concerned. My father, an ex police officer, would thank them for caring enough to question – I guess when you see what can happen, you are grateful to the people who are keeping a lookout.
And seriously … I once managed 3 fractures in my right arm and a really nasty break in my left foot from the same injury … I was injured while walking the dog on flat grass in the front yard of my house. True as it was, THAT was worth questioning! LOL
