Mrs Tussin:”This makes no sense!!! I must be really sick!”
Me: “Why? You were seen by your doctor two days ago for what sounds like a viral URI and he gave you a cough medicine and Zithromax.”
Mrs Tussin:”I know! But I must be really, really sick! The Zithromax it is not working!”
I dont get it
This needs to be taught in basic HS biology. I swear to goodness, even my MIL, who used to be an RN, believes that a simple viral cold needs antibiotics. And nothing in the world will convince my husband that she is wrong.
Because Zithromax doesn’t go shit for 99% of the people it’s prescribed for. Most bronchitis is viral but people think Abx cures all!
Reminds me of when I worked at a MD’s office and a guy called in a week after his appointment needing a prior auth to get his script for avelox filled. When I asked him why he was only getting it now, he said he was too busy at work but that he’d been taking some of his mom’s penicillin to “hold him over.” What made this worse was knowing I went to high school with this guy.
I’ve had some real geniuses come in to pick up a z-pak or another abx from the pharmacy and complain that we didn’t hold it on the shelves for a month or two. Of course it seemed like half the time I call the office to get permission to dispense it, the office okays it even if the patient has not been seen in a couple of months. These aren’t the cases where the doctor will give a script for abx with refills but a one time fill and the person decided to wait a couple of months and now when it was allergy season, wanted it filled because they were congested. And people wonder why resistance rates are so high.
Well, she shouldn’t complain. The one and only time I got Zithromax the side effects were worse than the disease. I had to go back for followup and the doc said, geez, you only had one thing wrong with you two days ago and now you have two. We’re going the wrong way. I’d have preferred it didn’t work at all.
When I was at school I had a pretty bad cold and my roommate told me I should go to the doctor and get abx… And then she got mad at me for not going. Really, people. :(
