For some reason this past weekend was full of excitement in the ED. I work in a community ER which is NOT a trauma receiving centre – so we don’t get much “real” trauma. However, each of the three previous nights I worked (Fri, Sat, Sun) I had one stab wound the abdomen! All walk-ins (well, one took a cab) and two out the three went to the OR. One dude was unfortunately on the receiving end of blade that was inserted into his left thoracoabdominal area by and disagreeable young man who crashed a relatively upscale party (and thus, he had insurance – very rare among people who are stabbed!). He spleen was lacerated in several places but luckily it did not have to be removed. One kid came in saying he “punctured his stomach” while climbing over a fence. Yeah right. The third was a woman who claims she was stabbed while trying to get into her house by an unknown assailant. She however went into the house afterwards and changed clothes! Hmmmmmm.
The person most excited by these cases was the PGY-2 surgical resident on call. “I am the first 2 (second year) in my class to do an operative trauma case!!!! YEAHHHH!”
Nice to have something different than the usual cavalcade of 90+ y/o sepic nursing home patients.

Variety is the spice (slice?) of life.
Sounds like a weekend that was a cut above the rest.
hehe…jun residents hands will be itching!!..
last week one case had come to casualty who had initially lied saying he had a bad fall[on a fence] and later we came to know tht it was a stab case…!!
anything to avoid mlc[medcicolegal case]..lol
Well if you have to work Fri, Sat & Sun, at least you weren’t bored!
