"Living? Yes. Human? Yes. Therefore if you care about them or not they are human lives."

They will not be born, because they will not be implanted in any human. Therefore, they will not be children.

If someone asks you how many children you have, do you give them a straight answer, or do you state that the answer is undefined, since you would need to examine you wife's (if you are female, your) sexual organs to see if any "children" are in there. They may only be a sperm and an egg getting to know each other, but to you they are children. Of course, that only applies to people who engage in intercourse, but there are a lot of people, who do that.

You are calling them "Children"?

You are claiming that my statement is BS?

You state that these cells are human. Yes, they have human DNA, but that is the extent of their humanity. If they are not implanted in a human, they will never develop. The cells in question will not be implanted in any humans, so their "life" is confined to a dish in a laboratory. If these cells were children, this would be intolerable treatment. Therefore, it is good that these cells are not children.

Or are you rushing out to get a court order for better "living conditions" for these "children"? If you aren't interested in their "living conditions," then you are the one behaving abominably toward "children." Don't preach religion, when this is a topic isolated to specific religious sects.

You are not protecting any sentient creature. Nothing that qualifies as a human being, unless you use an interpretation of a religious text, an interpretation only used by specific sects, from a text written thousands of years before there was even an awareness of what cells are. Of course, that is not a scientific definition.

If you used the limited interpretation of the definition provided by the religion, rather than science, you would not even be able to demonstrate that there is human DNA. You would only have the word of someone trained in science telling you that there is human DNA present. You would have no way of identifying these cells as human life without the use of science. If you were to present anyone from Biblical times if these cells are children, they would laugh at you. Then they might stone you as a witch.

Asking scientists to accept your specific religious sect's interpretation, at the expense of other religions, is just catering to those who complain the loudest. It isn't doing a thing for this human DNA that you claim is "children" that you care so much about.

"Regardless of what the policy is on the use of stem cells, they will never be children. They are embryos that will be destroyed if not used for research. The claim that these are lives that need to be protected is a lie."

Sorry, gotta call bullshit on that one!

Living? Yes. Human? Yes. Therefore if you care about them or not they are human lives.

I didn't realize humans who nobody cares about who are likely to die anyway were fair game for guilt-free killing. Think of all the great research we can get away with on Third-World street kids using this logic!

Neither side of the debate will do anything to cause these embryos to be implanted in a womb, so the claim that there is some higher morality involved is a complete fraud.

Yes! Let's cannibalize our young to extend our lives, or better yet, to make COSMETICS!! What the hell ever happened to "first do no harm"? Did the AMA tack on "except for embryos.. they're not even fetuses! Oh, and fetuses, because they're not even infants!" And in that line of thinking, what on earth could be next, hmm?

Well, we shall see. If we achieve great advances out of a few embryos then I consider that a small price to pay. We can always make more.
And again. THEY ARE EMBRYOS, not even fetuses!

I'm not a religious person, very much not so in fact.

I have tremendous objection to using human embryos in research, and I'd much rather my tax dollars not fund something I find morally repugnant and indefensible.

I have no problem with people believing otherwise, I just tend to object to the "everyone who thinks X is therefore a Y" approach.

Someday, someone will discover something really important w these stem cells and people will be coerced into having and aborting babies for their use. What, you're not going to get pregnant and abort a baby so I can be cured of my ALS? What kind of person are you?

It's just a fetus, no big whoop, right?

I have nothing against adult stem cell research. There is evidence of treatments. I am against embryonic stem cell research because it requires the death of children and there have been no treatments discovered. Didn't Bush restriction say that the gov't wouldn't fund stem research, not that other people couldn't fund it?
