When you call up the ER secretary and proceed to scream and yell at her, threatening to “come on down there” with your lawyer, you better have a damn good reason to gripe and behave like a dick-wad. However, when you then tell the secretary in obscenity strewn language that your anger is because one of the ER doctors diagnosed your child with influenza two days ago and prescribed Tamiflu “without testing for it” you are revealing your true douchebaggery. Either that or your obvious lack of a grasp on reality. A quick look at the records showed she WAS tested for and was POSITIVE for influenza A – however even if she wasn’t, you are in no position to freak out when you don’t realise that the current recommendations by the CDD are to treat presumptively for it when children present with symptoms highly likely for the disease. Please Lady, come down here with your tool-bag lawyer raving like a lunatic and we will promptly sedate you with Haldol and send you off to county. You are obviously completely nuts.

In all fairness, Tamiflu makes kids puke. Take a kid who maybe has a high fever but otherwise mild symptoms and shove ‘em full of Tamiflu and as far as the parent can tell you’ve made them worse rather than better.
On the other hand we made it through our Tamiflu course (and multiple rounds of vomit) without any drama and we had not one but two negative flu tests (Peds and urgent care). Some people just can’t deal.
Who brought the child into the ER? Perhaps her real gripe is that the ex brought the child in without telling or consulting her and, since she has custody, and since her insurance will not pay for unauthorized visits to the ER, she’ll wind up having to pay for the visit, etc. What is your policy in such a case?
Evidently the husband brought the kid in and was so clueless he did not even realise his child was flu swabbed. The child had no side effects from the Tamiflu but for some reason the mom freaked out when she thought we treated the kid clinically! I don’t know how anyone could marry such a person, she was so out of control on the phone.
No matter what could have been going on at home, how the hell were you guys supposed to know? If she’s that pissed, maybe she should be taking it out on her husband not the staff. She deserves giant goons sent to her house to rearrange her knees for that remarkable display of asshattery.

As an individual who has worked in direct care at a residential facility with individuals living with a developmental disorders and mental illness, having a mental illness myself (major depressive disorder) and having had an maternal aunt with schizophrenia, I don’t find the degrogatory humor and comparisons of this individual’s rude behavior to stereotypes those with mental illness very funny. In addition, you perpetuate a negative and outdate stereotype of mental illness (using terms such as “lunatic” and “nuts”) and inpatient care which contributes to the continued stigma towards the mentally ill and obtaining treatment. As an aside, a person can be a asshole with or without having a mental illness. Time to get up-to-date with the times, doc.
Actually Rachael, I bet she was just your average run of mill person with antisocial personality disorder.
Sorry, should of read, “I don’t find the degrogatory humor and comparisons of this individual’s rude behavior to stereotypes of those with mental illness very funny.
So I wasn’t making a statement on this woman’s mental health or stupidity, as I said above, “a person can be an asshole either way” but rather I was addressing your using degrogatory stereotypes of the mentally ill as the butt of your humor lately in your posts. Not funny.
Rachael,
I find it hard to believe you have gone your entire life without calling someone crazy or nuts in your thoughts or out loud. Its slang. Someone acts obnoxious and ridiculous they get labeled as nuts. Its not the docs fault its popular culture. Do you wait to see someones BMI before the word fat comes to mind? no its human nature. Unless of course you are perfect then Im sorry.
I have to say the lady sounds nuts. She may not have a diagnosis yet, and may act like a lunatic. In my area, they are usually well off with too much money and time on their hands. I bet she wanted an infectious disease consult, a pulmonary consult, the primary care physician called as well. She may be temporarily insane… I fail to see any malpractice whether the child was tested or not. So bring your fancy lawyer with you. Waist everyone’s time tonight.
mental illness is not funny. no matter which way you look at it. it is even less funnier if you or somebody you love has gone through the experience.
Thank you, Milo, that is the point I was trying to get across, well said!
