One night an unfortunate man was brought in by EMS for a GSW (gun shot wound), not a truely unusual case at this particular hospital where I used to work. However, what was unusual is where he was shot, or should I say, where he shot himself. I am not going to stereotype here but this guy wound up having about 10K in Benjamins in the pocket of his jeans – so the following description will make a little more sense. He was carrying a pistol in his waistband (not a holster) unwisely positioned almost at mid-line when circumstances intervened necessitating its use (because you know that law-abiding citizens walk around with pistols in their waistbands). I guess he was a little trigger happy because he pulled it before the gun was clear of his belt. Instead of the bullet striking its intended target, it went straight down through his penis! He came in with blood splattered all over the front of his jeans so we expected the worst. This guy had two things going for him, number one he had a small caliber weapon (I assume a .22 or .38), second, he was as big as a horse! The bullet wound went right through his penile shaft, amazingly missing the urethra and testicles. Ultimately it did not even need any suturing. His pain and anxiety however required that he be sedated, so soon after arrival he was sleeping. Curious staff simply could not resist the urge to come up to the guy and lift up the sheets to check out how lucky he was! I am sure 50 cent has more scars than he does, but this one gives this guy more street cred I think!
I can just imagine his new favorite pick-up line: “Hey, baby, wanna see my bullet wound?”
The waistband is not a bad place to carry concealed, particularly in the small of the back. A pocket holster for a snub-nosed weapon is also a good choice, it prevents the gun printing against the clothes.
A 38 is, infact, a medium caliber bullet, and getting struck in the member by a 38 or a nine will cause devitalization of tissue for 4-6″ centred around the wound, or the temporary cavity will lead to avulsion of the tissue.
He was most likely hit with a small-calibre weapon a .22 or a .25. These are more likely to be jacketed bullets that would pass through without expanding, and have much less of a temporary cavity.
Interesting. Well, I would agree the small of the back is a good place, but not right above your Johnson!
Now that I think of it, I think the weapon he had was a .25 calibre Baretta.
